Using a .pdf document can be beneficial for many reasons:

It is a universal language which can be read across all computer platforms. Whether you are a PC or Mac user, you will have no trouble viewing the document.
The user is able to preserve all formatting, layouts, fonts and graphics from one computer to another.
It prevents another individual from changing the content.
Separate users are not required to have the same programs or the same fonts installed on their computer just to view the file.
